Self Awareness

The best and most enlightening conversations are usually ones that come out of the blue and encompass a topic that was least expected.

Jack said to me the other day, completely out of the blue and discussing a topic that was least expected, "I hope when I have kids I have girls."

"Why?" I asked him.

"Because they are a lot calmer than boys."

"What makes you think that?"

"Because," he said, getting a little huffy with my obvious ignorance of girls. I am not a girl you know. I am a mom who knows nothing of girls. "All you have to do is give them a Barbie doll and they will just sit around and comb hair all day."

So, while I am very happy with his awareness of what a handful he and his brother can be at times, I feel we must work on his stereotyping and gender profiling.

Let him know as a mom of 3 girls that they may comb a barbies hair all day, but they do it while squeling and singing and whining at the top of their lungs!!!

Right now I'd take a girl who'd sit and comb Barbie hair all day. J is driving me nuts today, and it's a short trip!

You should introduce him to my little girl! She's just as wild as the neighborhood boys and just as rambunctious! I long for quiet Barbie hair combing sessions!

Wow! My daughter will be 7 tomorrow and she does anything but sit and comb Barbie's hair all day! Cute story though.

Send him over to visit my niece. Once she has attacked him with her toy cricket bat, he may revise his views.

Little boys are a trip. Maybe one day you can give them a little sister so they can see for themselves just how inaccurate Jack's current views are. ;o)
