Oops. There's a lesson there.
And that's why our ashes stay in the pit for a week. Then I still douse them and then throw them on the bulbs.

Genious John! Well done. I hope the boys at least got to witness the confusion and chaos and panic.
A friend of mine did this with his shopvac with his fireplace. Turns out fires like air and a shopvac provides plenty of fanning for what appeared to be dormant coals.
