Our Coddled Athletes

Remember the 1976 version of the movie The Bad News Bears? At the end of that movie, the second place team gets one measly little trophy to share (but from this picture, it looks like they each got a beer so that makes up for it).
Times sure have changed. My oldest son is only six, and we are already trying to figure out what to do with all of his trophies.

Heather, These are too hard to read. You need to re-post them size large for those of us with 30 something, look-at-the-computer-screen-too-much eyes. I did see the Cardinals plug - GO CARDS! I feel your pain without reading the words, though. In Edmonton, the kids got medals - like the Olympics instead. They don't take up as much room and they end up in the toy box. Fine with me.

Around here they don't really do trophies anymore. i guess they figure there is no where to put them all. I agree but try expalining that to your little son who played baseball just so he could have a trophy. :(

Our trophies somehow never last more than a month or two past the season. They get played with and then broken and thrown out. I guess if I'd found a better place for them this wouldn't have happened, but oh, well.

When I was a kid, trophies always looked the same. Like there was only one mold per sport in the entire world that every team used every year. I started to think the parents got together, pulled the old nameplates off and had new ones applied. The ones you pictured are fancy compared to that!

I think something has been lost along the way. How do they think America became the superpower we have been (and that "have been" is getting closer to "was" every day!)?? We knew what it meant to win. And knowing what it means to win means knowing what it is like to lose. And how to be good sports. And how to strive to do better so next time we can win. If everyone gets the same thing all the time, where's the incentive to strive to be the best? Or even better?? GRRRRR... Hot botton. Heading for the fire extinguisher now. Sorry for blowing up all over your comments. No I'm not. Yes, I am, but not because I'm wrong, just because I probably shouldn't have vented it all here! AACK! OK - really shutting up now.

I know the feeling! My son plays baseball every year. The winning team gets a huge team trophy and then semi-large individual ones, but every team gets small individual trophies. Nobody loses anymore!
